They Took My Lodge, It Left Them Totally Broke

In Aspen, a ski town nestled in the Colorado mountains, Anya Sorensen, an independent backcountry ski guide, has run Ridge Post, her remote ski and climbing base camp, for five years. When her lease expires, landlord Harvey Holloway sets his sights on the steady stream of wealthy high-end winter visitors the business draws. He breaks their verbal renewal agreement, seizes the property to hand it over to his inexperienced daughter Kendall Holloway, sneering that Anya is just a rootless out-of-state girl. Anya hands over the premises calmly — then legally removes the custom gravity heating and storm-safe power system she personally funded and installed. Without this system, Ridge Post cannot survive brutal subzero winters. She also takes with her the GPS trail maps and rescue logs belonging to her loyal clients. Anya relocates to an abandoned ranger station perched on rugged terrain at the far end of the ski runs to build a new base. Hoping to cut costs, Kendall refits Ridge Post with cheap pipes that cannot withstand freezing temperatures. Ignoring snow load limits, she even adds an outdoor hot tub on the main roof and tears down Anya’s warning signs for winter drainage and freeze protection. Marcus Westwood, regional operations director of Snowstone Capital, checks in quietly to evaluate winter resort investment opportunities. On a heavy snow night, the hot tub pipes burst from frost, flooding the entire lodge with wastewater. Faced with Marcus’s inquiry, Kendall tries to shift blame. She posts fabricated claims on ski forums, accusing Anya of sabotaging the safety systems and whipping up online outrage. Anya responds promptly with notarized handover footage and signed liability waivers from her HVAC contractors. Public opinion swings sharply against the Holloways. Harvey Holloway’s family now faces claims from Snowstone Capital, safety investigations from the ski association, and foreclosure risks as their property loan falls overdue. In the end, Snowstone Capital acquires the lodge at a bankruptcy auction. They extend a special offer, inviting Anya Sorensen — expert in alpine rescue and trail development — to serve as a permanent partner for the town’s winter resort project.
